Whole-Home Renovations

When several rooms need attention, planning the work together can help create a more cohesive result. We coordinate the construction scope across spaces, accounting for how changes in one area may affect the rest of the home.

Interior Layout Changes

A revised floor plan can improve how rooms connect and how you move through your home. We assess the work involved in reconfiguring interior spaces and coordinate improvements with the home’s existing structure.

What Home Renovation in Boston Can Involve

Each renovation starts with the conditions already in place: the home’s age and layout, the state of its structure and systems, and any constraints that affect construction. That information helps clarify which improvements can be handled together, what requires additional coordination, and how to organize the work before finishes are selected.

Home remodeling in Boston may involve changes to room layouts, kitchens and baths, or several connected areas. McPherson Development coordinates the construction sequence so updates work with the home’s existing framework and the finished spaces serve their intended purpose. Contact us today to discuss your project with our team.

01

Establishing Your Priorities

For a home renovation in Boston, we begin by discussing what you want to change, which areas are involved, and what matters most to you. We also consider how the home is used now and where its layout or condition creates limitations.

These conversations help set priorities before the scope is defined, so the plan reflects how you want the home to function.

03

Coordinating the Work

Home remodeling in Boston can involve several trades and carefully timed work across different rooms. McPherson Development coordinates the sequence, keeps each phase connected to the agreed scope, and addresses construction details as the work progresses.

This helps the different parts of the renovation come together in the right order.

02

Defining the Scope

Choosing a home renovation contractor in Boston means finding a team that understands how individual decisions affect the full project. We outline the planned improvements, identify work that needs to happen together, and clarify what the project includes.

A clear scope gives you and the project team a shared reference as details are finalized.

04

Reviewing the Finished Areas

As construction nears completion, we walk through the renovated areas with you and review them against the agreed scope. We look at the visible finishes, completed work, and how the updated spaces connect with one another.

It’s also an opportunity to raise questions, clarify details, and identify any remaining items before the project wraps up.

Serving Greater Boston
One Door at A Time

I bought a 4-bedroom home on Martha’s Vineyard which needed what I considered some relatively “easy” updating. Lu McPherson was referred by a friend and after viewing his prior work online I took a leap of faith and decided to work with him. It was the best decision I ever made! While I had done renovations on prior homes in the past, they were much less complex and I was present to oversee the work. In this case, not only was I remote but I asked for a very tight timeline – I needed to be in the house within 6- 8 weeks. McPherson and his team were 100% professional from beginning to end. Communication throughout the project was excellent and he worked to my budget and level of comfort. The house (not surprisingly) needed a bit more work than I’d originally anticipated but everything suggested by McPherson and his team was necessary and communicated ahead of work being started.

The renovations were absolutely exactly as I wanted and exceeded my expectations! Importantly, with this team I did not have to fly over to the island to review work - updates by photo and video were made available constantly.

Finally, the work was done on budget and completely early  (despite my adding several new requests in the middle of the project)!  I would recommend McPherson Development LLC, for any home renovation/construction project without reservation. I’m already planning to get on their schedule for the next phase of my home renovations!

Home Renovation in Boston: Local Planning Factors

Before construction begins, clarify what the project will change and which approvals may be needed. In Boston, the permit path can depend on the scope of work, the building’s use, and whether the property is subject to historic or zoning review.

Historic Property Review

If a home is individually landmarked or located in a local historic district, proposed exterior changes, and some interior changes, may need commission review. Check the property’s status before finalizing plans.

Permits for Renovations

Home renovation permits in Boston depend on the work involved. The city describes short-form permits for minor alterations and repairs that don’t change a building’s structure or use; major alterations that do may require a long-form permit.

Planning Around Your Household

If you’ll remain in the home during construction, discuss how work areas, access, noise, dust, and possible utility interruptions may affect daily routines. Identify which spaces need to stay accessible so those needs can be considered when planning the work sequence.

Setting The Budget

Build the budget around the agreed scope, material choices, and conditions that may only become visible once work begins. Separate confirmed work from potential discoveries so you can discuss how an unexpected issue could affect the project.

Planning the Schedule

Allow time for approvals, material decisions, site access, and coordination among trades. Permit reviews or historic commission approval can affect when construction begins, so identify those requirements during planning.
